More Information

To have a career as a pilot you must hold a Commercial Pilot Licence. AWA offers a CASA AVI40108 Certificate IV in Aviation (Commercial Pilot Aeroplane Licence) course. When you successfully complete the course you will receive a CASA Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL).

The CASA CPL licence enables the holder to conduct private and commercial flights within Australia in good weather by day. The minimum age for the issue of a Commercial Pilot Licence is 18 years. The applicant must be able to speak, read, write and comprehend the English language.

If you enrol in the Australian Wings Academy integrated CPL, you will need at least 150 hours of flying experience, with 70 hours as pilot in command, and 20 hours of cross country as pilot in command, and 10 hours of instrument flight experience. With the150-hour course, the theory and the flight training are coordinated and conducted together. The AWA syllabus is specifically tailored to "placing the student in the right hand seat of a commercial multi crew transport aircraft". We incorporate multi crew call outs and airline style checklists from the start of the pilots training.

The training for the CPL is aimed at achieving a high standard of flying skill, knowledge and airmanship. You will be specifically instructed in the procedures for conducting commercial operations. This will include the management of passengers as well as the management of the aircraft. You will be consolidating all your knowledge and practical skill in navigational exercises, carrying out normal procedures and all types of emergency procedures. You will practice making many command decisions under pressure and in various circumstances in order to simulate real life situations and increase situational awareness.

Before you attempt the CPL flight test, you must pass the seven CPL theory examinations.
After passing the CPL flight test, you will be issued with the Commercial Pilot Licence. This licence entitles you to carry passengers for hire and reward when held in association with a licensed Air Operating Certificate. This licence is required to operate as a light aircraft charter pilot. You will now be able to fly as the pilot in command of a single pilot aircraft, or as the co-pilot in a multi-crew aircraft.

Instrument Rating

Once you have completed your CPL, AWA offers a Diploma of Aviation incorporating a Command Multi Engine Instrument Rating (MECIR). This is often referred to as an IFR Rating. IFR stands for Instrument Flight Rules.

Requirements

Be 18 years or older on completion of your flying training to gain your licence.

More Information

The MECIR allows you to go flying virtually anywhere at any time, and in most cases you are not limited by weather. We teach you how to take on the challenging role of flying the aircraft solely with reference to Instruments in all various weather conditions.

You will firstly complete your initial multi engine endorsement, which involves 7 flight hours in the Beechcraft Duchess twin-engine aircraft, which is one of the most stable multi engine training aircraft available. There is also 8 hours of briefing. You will learn how to fly the twin engine aircraft and most importantly, how to handle the aircraft on only one engine.

The initial part of the IFR training is conducted in the Alsim AL200 synthetic training device (often called a simulator). The AL200is fully computerised with all types of navaids, including DME and GPS, and can simulate all sorts of procedures including Air Traffic Control, weather, and the most important emergency procedures that cannot be practiced in real flight.

The flight training is conducted in the Beechcraft Duchess BE76 twin engine aircraft. You will do approximately 23 hours in the Duchess. At AWA we teach you all the relevant navigation aids including ISL, VOR, NBD, GPS/RNAV and DME.

At the completion of your training you will take the IFR flight test. The first part of the test is a 3 hour interview with the Testing Officer to test your general knowledge of the flight rules associated with IFR Flight. Once you pass the theory, you will then proceed to the flight test in the aircraft, which will consist of approximately 3 hours flying

Minimum Entry Requirements for the MECIR
Pass in the Instrument Rating Theory Exam (IREX)
Private Pilot Licence
Current medical
50 hours cross-country flight time as pilot in command
40 hours instrument time (including a minimum of 20 hours in an aircraft)
